Wednesday, May 27
NAACP and the Nigerians in Frederick Association
This was a great opportunity for all five candidates for sheriff (Democrat and Republican) to appear together before the public. Law enforcement’s disparate impact on minority populations was the primary focus of the forum.
A clear difference in the candidates was demonstrated with others centering on reactive measures that overlooked the need for identifying root causes while I focused on building collaborative partnerships, using data driven research to identify root causes, that primarily lie in the social determinants that lead to crime and public order problems.
Success is not measured in the nature and amount reactive efforts to address the disparate impact law enforcement has on minority populations but should be measured by the success in eliminating the disparate impact.
